A Father Who Carried Us

Today, 15 August 2026, the Republic of Namibia marks a milestone of deep reflection, profound gratitude, and nationwide celebration as former President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba celebrates his 85th birthday.Â
Across our vast and beautiful country, from the banks of the Zambezi to the shores of Lüderitz, Namibians are pausing to honour a statesman who is revered not just as a political leader, but as a comforting father figure.Â
He is the man who carried the weight of a grieving country when we lost our beloved late President, Dr. Hage G. Geingob, in February 2024.Â
When news broke on 4 February 2024 that the "Pillar of the Namibian House," Dr. Hage Geingob, had passed away, a cloud of uncertainty and immense sorrow hung over the nation. It was an unprecedented crisis of grief.Â
Yet, in accordance with the Namibian Constitution, then Vice President Nangolo Mbumba stepped forward. Sworn in as Namibia's fourth president during a seamless and peaceful transition of power at State House, President Mbumba immediately became the anchor the nation desperately needed. Instead of panic, his calm presence and steady voice broadcasted reassurance.Â
He famously reminded us that while we had lost our visionary leader, the institutional foundations of our democracy remained unshakable. In doing so, he did not just fill a constitutional vacancy; he protected the psychological well-being of an entire population.Â
Throughout his tenure from 2024 to early 2025, President Mbumba navigated the political landscape with unique humility. He repeatedly stated that he had no desire to use his time in office to seek power for himself, but rather to fulfill a sacred duty to complete the term of his late brother and comrade, and to safely guide Namibia toward its next chapter.Â
His leadership style was marked by inclusivity, continuity, and accessibility. He kept the Namibian House intact by actively reinforcing the core pillars of Dr. Geingob’s legacy, most notably the vision of collective growth and economic development. Under his watchful guidance, the Constitution was fiercely defended, which reinforced Namibia’s reputation as a global beacon of rule of law and mature democracy.
 National peace was preserved, allowing citizens to mourn collectively while looking toward the future with optimism, and a smooth political transition was secured, paving the way for the historic inauguration of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in March 2025.Â
Long before he took the highest office in the land, Dr. Mbumba had already dedicated his entire life to the service of the Namibian people. From his critical contributions during the liberation struggle to his exemplary service as a Cabinet Minister, SWAPO Party Secretary-General, and Vice President, his track record has always been defined by integrity and selflessness.Â
But it was his tenure as our fourth president that cemented his place in our hearts as a grandfather and father of the nation.Â
 He held our hands when our hearts were broken, and he gave us direction when we felt lost. Today, as Dr. Nangolo Mbumba celebrates 85 years of a life beautifully lived, Namibia salutes him. We thank him for his courage, his sacrifice, and his fatherly protection during our time of greatest need.Â
Happy 85th Birthday, Your Excellency! May Almighty God continue to bless you with good health, strength, and joy.Â
