Yvonne Chaka Chaka rocks Windhoek Jazz Festival

By Rosalia David

LEGENDARY South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka has rocked this year’s Windhoek Jazz Festival performing her hit tracks such Umgombothi, I’m in love with a Deejay, Keep Looking at Me, and Jewel of Africa.

She had the crowd on their feet asking for more and left music lovers with a touching message to take away, urging the Namibian youth to never give up on their dreams, she also touched on the sensitive topic of xenophobia.

“I am sorry for the xenophobia in South Africa. When we work together, we can break all boundaries and Keep Looking at Me is a song to all the beautiful African girls. They are beautiful and strong. I want them to always remember this. I am married for many years now but I still tell my husband to ‘keep looking at me’” she said.

She delivered a memorable experience to her fans, performing songs dedicated to the bygone stars of yesteryear, such as Brenda Fassie and Zimbabwean legend Oliver Mtukuzi.

The event was staged at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday and party goers flocked in numbers to the venue to enjoy a night of exquisite Jazz music.

Joining Yvonne, artists such as Vusi Nova, Garth Taylor and Dan Shout from South Africa also delivered outstanding performances, as well as Cícero Lee, a Portuguese bassist and composer to make for a most memorable event.

The supporting acts were Rose Blvc, Sean K, Fu Jazz Band, The Swingers Dance Band, Willian Petersen and Ugly Creatures, while Chops Tshoopara and Che Ulenga were the MCs for the night, keeping the crowd glued to the stage while the musicians prepared for their set backstage.

For an artist who had never been to the land of the brave before, Nova, who was the main act, also had the crowd begging for more, with his stage presence taking them back in time. “Namibia is a beautiful place, and I’m pleased to have met my fans here, he told his mainly Namibian audience. “Thank you all for coming. I am so grateful for such an opportunity.”

Taylor’s performance stood out for his interaction with the crowd as he performed a mix of old and new songs, such as his hits Why?, and Only With You, as well as cover versions of much-loved old school classics like the evergreen ballad Hello by Lionel Richie.
