The Simply You Magazine Lifestyle and Fashion Awards (SYMLAFA) will return this month with a promise of elegance, creativity, and celebration of local excellence. In an interview with Confidente , SYMLAFA creative director, Helena Shigwedha, explained that this year’s theme symbolizes the strength and sophistication of Namibian talent.
“The theme celebrates the elegance, resilience, and brilliance of Namibian talent. Diamonds represent strength and value, while the black-tie concept adds sophistication. Together, they capture the high standard of excellence we aim to showcase at SYMLAFA 2025,” Shigwedha said. She described SYMLAFA as a platform rooted in celebrating Namibian creativity, adding that it honours individuals who continue to make strides in the fashion, lifestyle, and creative industries.
“We honour local individuals who are making waves in fashion, lifestyle, and the creative industry showing that our homegrown talent is not only relevant but exceptional on every level,” she noted. Since its inception eight years ago, SYMLAFA has grown from a small-scale gathering into one of Namibia’s most influential fashion and lifestyle events. “We have grown in size, reach, production value, and influence. Beyond the glitz, we have also created real industry opportunities for creatives and improved public engagement.”
She highlighted the importance of MTC’s continued partnership, noting that the telco’s three-year sponsorship commitment of N$250 000 ensures the awards’ sustainability and future growth. “MTC’s support allows us to plan ahead, scale up, and continue creating impact. It ensures consistency and quality, while also validating the importance of investing in the creative industry for long-term growth,” Shigwedha explained.
Over the years, SYMLAFA has played a defining role in Namibia’s creative economy by providing visibility and recognition for local designers, stylists, models, and content creators. “The platform has opened doors to collaborations, media exposure, and professional growth, while helping shift the narrative around fashion and the creative industry in Namibia.” As anticipation builds for this year’s event, audiences can expect a “more refined, high-end production a sophisticated night of fashion, live performances, storytelling, and special moments that truly reflect the richness of Namibian excellence.”
On inclusivity, Shigwedha emphasized that SYMLAFA strives to represent the full cultural diversity of the country. “We are intentional about including diverse voices. Our nominees represent different regions, tribes, and creative disciplines. We also feature a range of performers and collaborators to ensure broader representation of Namibia’s cultural landscape,” While organizing a large-scale event comes with its challenges, particularly around funding and maintaining standards, Shigwedha said the passion and dedication of her team, together with the support from partners, continue to drive the platform’s success.
“The creative sector in Namibia deserves to be celebrated. SYMLAFA is not just about glitz and glamour. It is about honouring the hard work, resilience, and excellence of our people.” SYMLAFA 2025 promises to be a night that cements the country’s position as a growing force in the African fashion and lifestyle scene a showcase of Namibian brilliance wrapped in elegance.
