FNB Wanderers Rugby Club head coach Darryl de la Harpe has sent out a strong warning to defending Namibia Rugby Premier League (NRPL) champions FNB Kudus, saying his side is ready to challenge for the title.
The two sides will square off in the league final on 10 October at the Hage Geingob Stadium, in what is expected to be an exciting encounter.
Speaking to Confidente this week, de la Harpe said Wanderers will go into the final with confidence, particularly because of the depth in their squad, although Kudus arguably have some of the most experienced players in the league.
“Off the ball, we are the best team. Therefore, we have a good chance of beating them. We will be preparing well, especially tactically and offensively. We do have depth in our squad, which comprises both experience and youth.
“If you look at our statistics in the league, we have collected 85 points, which is a record. We also have more bonus points and points against us. On the other hand, they (Kudus) have more players in the national team. So, we will give them a run for their money,” said de la Harpe.
However, FNB Kudus head coach Eugene Jantjies, who is also Namibia’s most capped senior national team player, remains confident in his side’s chances.
Jantjies said Kudus will need to capitalise on their opportunities and minimise the mistakes that contributed to their two defeats against Wanderers during the group stage.
Kudus reached the final after beating Montego United 55-38 in the semi-final last Saturday at the Hage Geingob Stadium, while Wanderers brushed aside FNB Grootfontein 60-27 on the same day at the same venue.
The results set up a repeat of last year’s final between the two sides.
“You know, going back, most teams look at how they beat us. At the end of the day, it is all about who is ready. We will, of course, try to get a victory.
“They beat us because of our mistakes in the league. They (Wanderers) have a good defensive structure. We just did not capitalise on our chances against them, especially here at home in Walvis Bay.
“Yes, we do want to retain the title because they are not unbeatable,” said Jantjies.
