Ride-hailing to entrepreneurship – My journey as a yango driver

What started as a hustle for survival became one of my greatest classrooms. I joined Yango part-time while balancing school, driven by curiosity about logistics and the economics of transport. To date, I have completed over 3,400 rides, each one teaching me something new about people, demand, and discipline.
Ride-hailing is often misunderstood. Behind every trip is strategy: fuel management, route planning, understanding peak hours, and calculating risk versus reward. As competition increased, longer hours were sometimes necessary to meet financial targets, covering fuel, vehicle maintenance, and daily living expenses. The margins can shift quickly depending on demand, distance, and timing. Smooth driving, smart positioning, and understanding the algorithm make all the difference.
One of the most powerful lessons came through people. I have transported professionals, directors, creatives, and everyday citizens many of whom shared insights that expanded my mindset. I remember a passenger who had previously experienced trauma using public transport. By the end of our trip, she felt reassured and safe. Moments like that reminded me that this service is not just transport; it is trust.
Networking through ride-hailing also opened doors. Meeting the right clientele led to referrals, partnerships, and unexpected opportunities.
In September last year, I launched SwiftRide and Errands by KK, inspired by delivering cakes for a local small business Gina bakes. What began as helping a cousin evolved into a structured errand and delivery platform. My experience with Yango sharpened my understanding of supply and demand, customer service, and logistics management.
Hard work opens doors, but in logistics, working smart opens even more. Every seat in your car is an opportunity. Entrepreneurship truly begins where you are.
