Limkokwing Namibia empowers youth
By Patience Makwela
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Namibia has reinforced its commitment to youth development by enhancing access to higher education, creating opportunities for skills development, and awarding scholarships to talented young Namibians. Through the initiatives the university aims to equip students with skills that align with Namibia’s growing creative and technology-driven economy.
The university offers programmes in graphic design, architectural technology, information technology, software engineering, and media studies including radio, television, and broadcasting. They also offer fashion design and business management. These courses are designed to meet the evolving needs of Namibia’s creative and digital industries while equipping students with practical skills for the modern workplace. According to the university’s officials, these programmes also reflect the aspirations of young Namibians who are seeking meaningful and sustainable careers.
Limkokwing Namibia has placed particular emphasis on partnerships with industry as a strategy to strengthen workforce development. A notable example is its collaboration with the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). Through this partnership, NBC staff members have been awarded scholarships to pursue advanced studies in media, broadcasting, and digital production. The scholarships aim to improve professional skills, enhance local capacity, and ensure that the country’s broadcasting sector maintains high standards of competency and innovation.
“By investing in the professional development of media practitioners, we are creating a direct impact not only for the students but also for their employers and the broader public,” said Josiah Mwashita the campus director at the university's Windhoek campus in Khomasdal. “The goal is to strengthen the broadcasting sector while supporting the growth of Namibia’s creative economy.”
During the university’s recent founders day celebrations, held in honour of its visionary founder, Tan Sri Dato’ Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing, Limkokwing Namibia announced a new round of scholarships for young Namibians. These awards will provide full tuition support to students who demonstrate talent, creativity, and ambition but may not have the financial means to access tertiary education. According to the university, the selection process reflects its values of innovation, entrepreneurship, and global citizenship.
The scholarships are targeted at promoting equal opportunities for young people across Namibia, including under-represented groups and learners from rural communities. Mwashita highlighted that expanding access to education is key to closing the gap between education and employment. By equipping students with relevant skills, Limkokwing Namibia seeks to increase youth employability and support the country’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy.
Mwashita also emphasises the broader socio-economic benefits of its programmes. "By enabling NBC staff to advance their qualifications, the university contributes to raising professional standards in the national broadcasting sector. This, in turn, supports the creation of local content, strengthens Namibia’s cultural voice, and ensures that young professionals are prepared to contribute to the country’s economic growth."
In addition to scholarships, the university has implemented various outreach programmes aimed at inspiring and preparing young people for careers in creative and technology-driven fields. These programmes include workshops, mentorship opportunities, and community engagement initiatives that expose students to practical applications of their studies. Mwashita said it plans to expand these efforts further in order to reach more communities, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.
He stated that the combination of academic programmes, industry partnerships, scholarships, and outreach initiatives ensures that Limkokwing Namibia students graduate with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This approach is designed to meet the expectations of employers and support the development of a workforce capable of driving innovation and competitiveness within Namibia and across the region.
“Limkokwing Namibia is committed to shaping the next generation of Namibian professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives. “Through education, training, and partnerships with industry, we are helping young people realise their potential while contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.” The university’s continued focus on quality education, skills development, and scholarship support demonstrates its role as a key player in Namibia’s education sector. By preparing students for careers in the creative, media, and technology industries, Limkokwing Namibia is not only empowering individuals but also contributing to the long-term growth and competitiveness of the national economy. According to Mwashitathe university will continue to expand and keep it's doors at the Khomsdal campus open for many prospective students and trainees for years to come.
