  • By Staff Reporter

THE Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) through its brand beer, Windhoek Draught has once again renewed its sponsorship initiative with the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU). This was announced by NBL this week, as part of the company’s long-term standing commitment to fostering national development, unity and excellence through sport.

Rugby remains a big beneficiary of the sponsorship, in particular, the men senior national team, nicknamed the ‘Windhoek Draught Welwitschias’.  NBL’s Managing Director Waldemar von Lieres, explained that the love and passion many Namibians have towards the sport, was key in their decision to re-affirm its long standing partnership with the union.

The sponsorship could not have come at a better time, as the senior national team preparing itself for the upcoming Rugby Africa Cup slated for July, a cup competition which is used as a  qualifier to the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The renewed agreement will also see NBL continue to support the NRU’s development programs, national team preparations and community outreach initiatives.
The partnership also includes joint efforts to promote responsible drinking and fans’ engagement across the country.

“Rugby in Namibia holds a special place in the hearts of many and it continues to be a powerful force for unity, pride and national identity,” according to Von Lieres.

“At Namibia Breweries, our Windhoek Draught Beer brand is proud to stand alongside the union as a committed partner in this journey. This renewed partnership is more than just a sponsorship. It is a reaffirmation of our belief in the potential of Namibian sport to inspire, uplift and bring communities together.”

He added: “It aligns perfectly with our purpose to brew a better Namibia and create a future with more cheers. We are excited to support the team as they prepare for a promising 2025 season both on and off the field.”  NRU President John Heynes, welcomed the renewed partnership and described it as a form of developing the sport at the grassroots level.

“NBL has been a cornerstone of support for Namibian rugby. Their continued investment enables us to grow the game at all levels and build a stronger future for our players and fans,” said Heynes. *Additional information: Michael Uugwanga
