THE country’s top female Muay Thai fighter, Sonja Simon defeated Mauritius fighter Gaelle Sangahoopu few weeks ago to claim the World Muatthai Council (WMC) African title in the featherweight division.
Simon has a history of competing in other top Muay Thai events, such as the Eclipse Fight League, which is one of the world’s best events in the world and continues to represent the country on international stages.Muay Thai it is a martial art and full-contact combat sport that uses stand-up striking, sweeps, and various clinching techniques.
She is currently based in Saudi Arabia, with the aim of better opportunities to fight more. Last year December she managed to win a gold medal in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and also had several participations in Turkey this year.
Simon became a Muay Thai fighter few years ago and ever since the introduction to the sport, she has never looked back, and today she has developed into one , if not the best female Muay Thai fighters on the continent.
Speaking to Confidente this week, Simon said the win against Sangahoopu was due to the hard work she has been putting in training and as a result she will continue to work hard so that she wins more titles in the near future.
“The secret behind the win was simple, that is to keep training and hard work, especially on the cardio and technique. I am not sure when my next fight is. I am still based in Riyadh. What is next for me after the win is just hard work and get ready for any opportunities that come. The title was more about prevention or creating awareness on drugs abuse,” said Simon.
