For many Namibians, concerns about international relations are secondary to the daily realities of unemployment, rising living costs, food insecurity and limited economic opportunities. As discussions emerge around a possible easing of tensions between the United States and Iran, Namibia must approach the development with a clear focus on national interests and economic opportunities.
The question is not whether a peace agreement represents a victory for diplomacy. The question is what practical benefits it can bring to Namibia.
As the country prepares for the opportunities presented by its emerging oil and gas industry, Namibia should actively pursue partnerships that deliver skills transfer, technology, infrastructure development and investment. Countries with decades of experience in energy production can help Namibia build local expertise and avoid becoming merely an exporter of raw resources.
Yet oil alone cannot be the. The country’s greatest challenges remain job creation, industrialisation and economic diversification. Any future cooperation arising from improved international relations should therefore extend beyond the energy sector into agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, education and technology.
Namibia has long maintained a foreign policy rooted in friendship, cooperation and non-alignment. That approach should now be leveraged to attract investment and development opportunities from all willing partners. The measure of success should not be the number of agreements signed or diplomatic visits exchanged, but the number of jobs created, businesses supported and communities uplifted.
Global peace is always welcome. Stable international relations generally create a more favourable environment for trade, investment and economic growth. However, Namibia must ensure that international developments translate into tangible local benefits.
Ultimately, what matters to the unemployed graduate, the struggling small business own- er, the farmer facing rising costs and the commuter paying for ex- pensive fuel is simple: Will these developments improve my life?
