Founding Father Sam Nujoma, shortly before his passing, warned that “imperialist” forces sought to remove former liberation movements from power, urging the Swapo-Party to remain vigilant and unified, Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa revealed.
Shaningwa stated that during a meeting five months prior, Nujoma cautioned against these forces, emphasizing the need for a strong, united front to protect the party.
“Last year, on 11 July, Comrade Dr. Nujoma invited me to his residence, and his wisdom was that the Swapo-Party must always be protected, unity must prevail, and we must remain vigilant against imperialists seeking to remove former liberation movements,” she said at a memorial service in Etunda, Omusati region.
“We vow to honor his words: protect the party, unify the Namibian people, and remain vigilant.”
Shaningwa credited Nujoma’s leadership for Namibia’s current state, highlighting his role in galvanizing international support against apartheid South Africa.
Despite South Africa’s intransigence, Nujoma’s leadership of PLAN transformed it into a formidable force that ultimately contributed to Swapo’s victory in the 1989 UN-supervised elections.
She further emphasized Nujoma’s contribution to national reconciliation, the foundation of Namibia’s peace and stability, and his subsequent efforts in nation-building and economic development. “Under his leadership, the Swapo-Party led government succeeded in consolidating our hard-won freedom and independence,” she concluded.
