The Government of India has opened applications for fully funded scholarships for Namibian students under the India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme for the 2026–2027 academic year, offering young Namibians a chance to pursue higher education at more than 130 universities across India.
The programme, administered by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, allows students from Namibia to apply for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in a wide range of fields including engineering, medicine, business, agriculture, information technology and the social sciences.
The scholarships form part of India’s broader effort to strengthen educational cooperation with African countries while expanding opportunities for students to gain international academic exposure.
Successful applicants will be able to study at recognised Indian universities, which are among the largest and most diverse higher education institutions in the world. The programme aims to equip students with academic knowledge and practical skills that can contribute to development in their home countries.
For Namibia, where youth unemployment and skills shortages remain pressing challenges, access to international education programmes is increasingly seen as a key pathway to building a competitive workforce. Sectors such as mining, renewable energy, healthcare and technology require specialised expertise that many students seek to acquire through global academic partnerships.
Educational exchange programmes between India and African countries have expanded significantly over the years, with thousands of students benefiting from scholarships and training opportunities. Many graduates of Indian institutions have gone on to occupy influential roles in government, business and academia across the continent.
The India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme is designed to deepen people-to-people relations while strengthening long-standing diplomatic ties between India and Namibia. Through the programme, students gain not only academic qualifications but also exposure to different cultures and professional networks.
Applications for the 2026–2027 academic intake are now open, with eligible Namibian students encouraged to apply for the fully funded opportunities available through the scheme.
