Malema’s sentence not a surprise – Iipumbu

The Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) deputy leader deputy president and parliamentarian Kalimbo Iipumbu said Thursday’s sentencing of South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema five years direct imprisonment for discharging a firearm in the public, did not come as a surprise.

Speaking to Confidente following the ruling, Iipumbu stressed that the outcome was anticipated, arguing that the case had long been viewed as an extension of broader political pressures.

He described the ruling as politically motivated as expressed concern over what he described as a harsher punishment.

“All along when this case came that it is politically driven.

Those that had colonized us still have this system of coming back to us as Africans. To continue oppressing us, even if we have political freedom in our lands,” Iipumbu said.

He linked the case to the historical mission of the EFF and noted that the movement is largely driven by politically conscious youth seeking economic emancipation across the continent.

He cautioned that imprisoning Malema would have triggered unrest in South Africa, describing the EFF leader as a key voice for marginalized communities.

“What would the country benefit? Because you are creating a chaotic moment where you lock up someone who is a voice of the voiceless. High unemployment levels in South Africa underpin the support base of the EFF” he added.

Iipumbu also criticized the handling of the case, questioning the severity of the sentence for a first-time offender and suggesting the judiciary should reflect on its conduct.

“Malema being the first offender, why impose a heavier sentence on someone who is even a leader of a political party?”
Iipumbu further alleged that external political influence may have played a role, claiming the matter extended beyond South Africa’s domestic realities.

Despite his criticism, he said the NEFF welcomed the fact that the matter would proceed to appeal, arguing that this would allow for a more balanced outcome.

“We welcome the decision, we welcome the appeal and we are praying that the revolution of emancipating our people economically will continue in a spirit that we will not surrender.”

He urged the courts to apply “common sense” and avoid being swayed by political emotions, emphasizing that penalties such as fines or warnings would have been more appropriate under the circumstances.

A Father Who Carried Us

By Kevin Rukoro Today, 15 August 2026, the Republic of Namibia marks a milestone of deep reflection, profound gratitude, and nationwide celebration as former President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba celebrates his 85th birthday.  Across our vast and beautiful country, from the banks of the Zambezi to the shores of Lüderitz, Namibians are pausing to honour a statesman who is revered not just as a political leader, but as a comforting father figure.  He is the man who carried the weight of a grieving country when we lost our beloved late President, Dr. Hage G. Geingob, in February 2024.  When news broke on 4 February 2024 that the "Pillar of the Namibian House," Dr. Hage Geingob, had passed away, a cloud of uncertainty and immense sorrow hung over the nation. It was an unprecedented crisis of grief.  Yet, in accordance with the Namibian Constitution, then Vice President Nangolo Mbumba stepped forward. Sworn in as Namibia's fourth president during a seamless and peaceful transition of power at State House, President Mbumba immediately became the anchor the nation desperately needed. Instead of panic, his calm presence and steady voice broadcasted reassurance.  He famously reminded us that while we had lost our visionary leader, the institutional foundations of our democracy remained unshakable. In doing so, he did not just fill a constitutional vacancy; he protected the psychological well-being of an entire population.  Throughout his tenure from 2024 to early 2025, President Mbumba navigated the political landscape with unique humility. He repeatedly stated that he had no desire to use his time in office to seek power for himself, but rather to fulfill a sacred duty to complete the term of his late brother and comrade, and to safely guide Namibia toward its next chapter.  His leadership style was marked by inclusivity, continuity, and accessibility. He kept the Namibian House intact by actively reinforcing the core pillars of Dr. Geingob’s legacy, most notably the vision of collective growth and economic development. Under his watchful guidance, the Constitution was fiercely defended, which reinforced Namibia’s reputation as a global beacon of rule of law and mature democracy.  National peace was preserved, allowing citizens to mourn collectively while looking toward the future with optimism, and a smooth political transition was secured, paving the way for the historic inauguration of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in March 2025.  Long before he took the highest office in the land, Dr. Mbumba had already dedicated his entire life to the service of the Namibian people. From his critical contributions during the liberation struggle to his exemplary service as a Cabinet Minister, SWAPO Party Secretary-General, and Vice President, his track record has always been defined by integrity and selflessness.  But it was his tenure as our fourth president that cemented his place in our hearts as a grandfather and father of the nation.   He held our hands when our hearts were broken, and he gave us direction when we felt lost. Today, as Dr. Nangolo Mbumba celebrates 85 years of a life beautifully lived, Namibia salutes him. We thank him for his courage, his sacrifice, and his fatherly protection during our time of greatest need.  Happy 85th Birthday, Your Excellency! May Almighty God continue to bless you with good health, strength, and joy.  This views and opinions are not necessarily of my employer but of my very own.  By Kevin Rukoro a youth activist,  public servant, media student and founder of the Anointed Levites Foundation.
