According to many university students, academic success is measured by passing examinations and completing assignments.
However, according Jenefa Shindondola, a final-year Geology student at the University of Namibia (UNAM), education extends far beyond the lecture hall.
Through her role as President of the UNAM Geology Student Society, she is helping shape a generation of young geoscientists while proving that leadership can be one of the most powerful tools for youth empowerment.
At a time when Namibia continues to rely on its mining sector as one of the key drivers of economic growth, preparing young people to enter the industry has become increasingly important.
While universities provide the academic foundation, Shindondola believes student organizations have an equally important responsibility: preparing graduates for the realities of the professional world.
“The Society bridges the gap between classroom learning and the professional industry,” Shindondola said.
Instead of limiting learning to textbooks and lecture notes, the UNAM Geology Student Society creates opportunities for students to experience geology in the field.
Through educational excursions, industry visits, workshops, and conferences, students are exposed to the practical side of the profession long before graduation.
“We organize educational field trips that allow students to see geological concepts in real-life settings, which greatly enhances their understanding,” she said.
She believes these experiences not only strengthen academic knowledge but also give students confidence as they prepare to enter one of Namibia’s most important industries.
“We also encourage students to attend conferences, workshops and seminars where they can learn from experienced professionals,” she added.
Shindondola also added that those activities help students build confidence, expand their professional networks, and gain valuable insights into career opportunities.
Beyond technical knowledge, the students’ society focuses on developing qualities that employers increasingly value.
Leadership, teamwork, communication, and organizational skills are deliberately cultivated through student activities and executive roles, ensuring members graduate as well-rounded professionals.
