The Chinese Embassy yesterday came alive with colour, music, dance and tradition as schools and cultural groups gathered for a Culture Fair, bringing together young people and cultural enthusiasts to showcase their heritage and learn from one another.
Welcoming participants, Chinese Ambassador Zhao Weiping highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening understanding and friendship between China and Namibia, saying activities that bring people together create opportunities to appreciate one another’s traditions, values and ways of life.
He also emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for young Namibians to engage with Chinese culture and for people-to-people exchanges to deepen relations between the two countries, a theme that has featured prominently in the Embassy’s cultural activities this year.
The event comes against the backdrop of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s recent state visit to China in July, which highlighted the growing scope of cooperation between the two countries.
During her engagements, Namibia and China reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation, including in areas that bring the two countries and their young people closer together.
Against this backdrop, the Culture Fair provided a lively platform for participants to showcase their cultures through traditional performances, music, dance, clothing, food, games and other cultural expressions.
More than a cultural showcase, the event encouraged participants to interact, exchange knowledge and develop a greater appreciation for the rich diversity of Chinese and Namibian cultures.
The gathering also demonstrated how cultural activities can serve as a bridge between communities, particularly among young people, by creating spaces for dialogue, learning and shared experiences.
From colourful traditional attire to energetic performances and cultural displays, the event celebrated the diversity that brings people together while highlighting the role of culture in strengthening ties between Namibia and China.
