At just 26 years old, Johannes Esser, better known by his stage name Assa Boy, is fast emerging as one of Namibia’s most promising musical talents.
Hailing from the quiet village of Eengwe in the Ongenga constituency of the Ohangwena region, Assa Boy is proudly carrying the northern sound across the country fusing the soulful energy of Afro beats with the raw storytelling of Kwaito.
In an interview with Confidente recently, the artist said his choice of genre reflects his roots, his culture, and the lived realities of Namibian youth.
“Afro music connects me to the African spirit, while Kwaito allows me to express daily struggles, joy, and hope,” Assa Boy said.
He said his music, rich in relatable messages of love, life, and perseverance speaks to a generation finding its rhythm amid adversity.
According to Assa Boy, the debut album, Oshikondobolo, marks a defining chapter in his musical journey.
“The 12-track project showcases my creative depth and storytelling ability, weaving together energetic beats with heartfelt lyrics that mirror my personal experiences.”
He worked closely with some of Namibia’s well-known creatives, including Kaboy Kamakili, DJ Quality, and his manager Haimbodi Paavo, all of whom helped shape the sound and spirit of the project.
“They believed in me and gave me the guidance and support I needed to bring my dream to life.”
Music runs deep in Assa Boy’s veins. He grew up listening to Namibian greats like Gazza, The Dogg, and Young T Wokongha, as well as continental giants such as Master KG and Burna Boy. Their success stories, he says, taught him that talent, when matched with hard work and faith, can break any boundary.
The artist, however, said his journey has not been easy.
Like many young artists, Assa Boy faced financial hurdles, limited studio access, and scarce promotional opportunities in Namibia’s competitive industry. Yet, he never let these challenges define him.
“Every obstacle taught me patience and persistence. I learned that real success takes time,” he reflected.
To his fans, Assa Boy offers heartfelt appreciation for their unwavering support.
“Thank you to everyone who listens, shares, and believes in my music. You are the reason I keep pushing forward.”
He urged upcoming artists, to support each other, stay humble, and never give up on your dreams.
“The industry needs teamwork and positive energy.”
As he continues to grow his brand, Assa Boy remains grounded in gratitude, especially toward Kaboy Kamakili, DJ Quality, his manager Paavo, his family, and friends who have stood by him since day one.
“Oshikondobolo is more than an album. It is a reflection of my story, my people, and my dreams,” he stated.
Assa Boy said he wants to prove that great talent can rise from the north and echo across the nation, stating that the beat of his dream is only getting louder.
