President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s state visit to China comes at a critical moment in Namibia’s development journey.
As the country seeks to accelerate economic transformation, industrialisation and job creation, the visit represents an opportunity to strengthen a partnership that has played an important role in Namibia’s development for more than three decades.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Namibia and China have built a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership based on mutual respect, shared interests and development cooperation.
China has become one of Namibia’s key trading partners and an important investor in infrastructure, mining, energy, manufacturing, telecommunications and other sectors.
However, the significance of this visit goes beyond reaffirming existing relations.
Namibia is entering a new phase of economic development, one that requires greater investment in value addition, technology transfer, skills development and industrial capacity.
The country must move beyond exporting raw materials and focus on building industries that create employment and strengthen economic independence.
China’s own development experience provides important lessons.
Through strategic planning, infrastructure investment, manufacturing growth, innovation and human capital development, China trans- formed its economy into one of the world’s largest.
While Namibia’s circumstances are unique, cooperation with China provides opportunities to access expertise, technology and investment that can support the country’s own development ambitions.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s engagements with Chinese leaders, investors and companies are therefore strategically important.
The focus on renewable energy, green hydrogen, agriculture, agro-processing, science and technology, housing and infrastructure aligns with Namibia’s priorities for economic diversification and sustainable growth.
The business engagements forming part of the visit are particularly important. Strong diplomatic relations must translate into meaningful economic partnerships that create opportunities for Namibian companies, attract investment and integrate the country into global value chains.
Namibia must position itself not only as a supplier of resources but as a destination for manufacturing, processing and innovation.
The visit also highlights the importance of strategic international partnerships in an evolving global environment.
Namibia’s foreign policy has always been guided by principles of independence, cooperation and the pursuit of national interests.
Engaging with China, while maintaining relations with other international partners, reflects a balanced approach aimed at advancing Namibia’s development objectives.
