Namibia’s mining sector continues to play a crucial role in the country’s economy, sustaining more than 166 000 jobs in 2025 and reaffirming its position as one of the nation’s largest contributors to employment and economic growth.

According to industry figures, the sector supports over 20 000 direct jobs and more than 145 000 indirect jobs across various industries, including transport, construction, engineering, logistics, catering and other support services.

The figures highlight the significant multiplier effect of mining activities in Namibia. While thousands of workers are employed directly at mines, processing plants and exploration projects, many more livelihoods depend on businesses and services linked to the industry.

The mining sector’s extensive supply chains continue to create opportunities for local enterprises and communities throughout the country.

Industry leaders say the sector remains a key driver of national development despite challenges in global commodity markets. Namibia’s mining industry is supported by the production of uranium, diamonds, gold, zinc, lithium and other critical minerals that are increasingly in demand worldwide.

Continued investment in exploration and new projects has contributed to employment growth and strengthened the sector’s long-term outlook.

The Chamber of Mines has also highlighted the sector’s strong commitment to local participation, with most permanent positions occupied by Namibian citizens.

This has helped build technical skills, create career opportunities and promote knowledge transfer within the country. Recent data indicates that direct employment in the industry has continued to grow, reflecting ongoing investment and expansion activities across several mining operations.

Beyond job creation, mining remains one of Namibia’s most important economic pillars. The industry contributes significantly to government revenue through taxes, royalties, and export earnings, while also supporting local procurement and business development.

Mining companies spend billions of Namibian dollars on goods and services sourced from local suppliers, helping to stimulate economic activity and strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises.
