The Oshakati town council (OTC) has allocated N$150 000 for the construction of shared toilets in some of the town’s information settlements. This information is contained in the town council’s budget for the 2025 – 2026, released recently.

Oshakati mayor, Leonard Hango stressed that although the council would have wanted each house to have its own toilet, fiscal challenges made this wish impossible. This, he says, is because not all residents have the means to build their own toilets and council came in with the assistance of the shared toilets.

“To address this, council has made budgetary provisions of N$150 000 for the construction of shared toilets in some informal settlements, with a particular focus on the Onawa location,” said Hango. To enhance environmental and waste management efforts, the council also set aside money for skip containers and wheelie bins.

“This project costs council an amount of N$350 000 to procure these skip containers and N$350 000 for wheelie bins.”
Hango added that, in an effort to increase the assets and revenue base, it initiated a project to construct council flats. This project is expected to address accommodation needs of job seekers migrating to Oshakati.

“The project began with phase one in the 2023/2024 financial year. Phase Two has been successfully implemented in the current financial year, with an allocation of N$4.8 million dedicated to its completion. The project is expected to be finalized by 31 July 2025.” The total budget for the new financial year is N$350,144,407.
