‘Pretty Boy’ dreams big

One of the country’s next biggest boxing super star, Joiy ‘Pretty Boy’ Nangolo is already dreaming big, with his eyes firmly set on future African and world titles, despite only turning professional in 2022.

At 23, he has already fought nine times ahead of his 10th fight this weekend when he takes on South African boxer Rofhiwa Nemushungwa at the Movenpick Hotel in Windhoek, a bout that could elevate him to an African title shot.

Nangolo, who is not related to Flame ‘Special One’ Nangolo, another exciting young boxer, was born in Omutele in the Oshikoto Region but currently resides in Swakopmund (Erongo Region). He grew up admiring legendary boxer Harry ‘Terminator’ Simon and Olympian Jonas Junias Jonas, both from the coast.

This week Confidente caught up with Nangolo as he prepares for his much- anticipated fight against the South African boxer at the MTC Nestor ‘Sunshine’ Boxing and Fitness Academy boxing bonanza.

He is a product of the AT Legacy Boxing Academy. “Boxing has given me direction and taught me discipline. Every day I am building a better future, not only for myself but also for my family. Boxing keeps me out of trouble. Besides boxing I do some work, although boxing is the goal.

“In the next five or six years, I see myself competing at a higher level, pushing for African and world titles, but to get there I have to be disciplined, keep improving, take the right fights, and build a strong team around me, and not take shortcuts,” said Nangolo.

Most local boxers in the country struggle financially, not just in terms of putting food on the table but also to buy training equipment, cover travelling expenses and secure personal sponsorship.

His nickname ‘Pretty Boy’ is derived from legendary American icon Floyd Mayweather’s early nickname.

“I took the name from Mayweather when he was young, as he was fearless and is my role model. Local boxers that inspire me are Danny Boy and Jonas Junias Jonas as we share the same gym. I am in dire need of sponsorship, proper training resources and exposure. For young or upcoming boxers, they should stay disciplined, believe in their journey, and most importantly stay away from alcohol and drugs,” Nangolo said.
