Namibian learner has secured a place on Rosatom’s international educational project, Icebreaker of Knowledge 2026, earning the opportunity to travel to the North Pole aboard the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy.
Kadhikwa Tironenn Amutenya was named among the winners of the seventh edition of the competition during an announcement ceremony at the Museum of Atomic Energy in Moscow.
In August, Amutenya will join learners from around the world on a unique Arctic expedition featuring scientific experiments, lectures, hands on workshops and interactive sessions led by Russian and international experts.
Nearly 5,000 learners aged between 14 and 16 from 23 countries, including Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania and Egypt, competed for a place on the voyage.
The finalists presented projects under the theme, “How nuclear technologies are changing the world today,” which were assessed by an international jury of experts from science, education and the nuclear industry.
Russian nuclear education ambassador Chanto Khoeun said programmes such as Ice-breaker of Knowledge help inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering.
The expedition will also provide participants with a rare opportunity to experience the Arctic environment and explore nuclear technology in practice.
Amutenya’s selection highlights Namibia’s growing participation in the programme and reflects expanding cooperation with Rosatom in the nuclear sector.
Namibia and Rosatom are advancing discussions on a framework agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, while Rosatom’s subsidiary Head-spring Investments is developing the Wings uranium project in the Omaheke Region using in situ recovery technology, considered among the world’s safest and most environmentally responsible uranium extraction methods.
