The Swakopmund municipality and the electricity distributor, Erongo RED have agreed to co-fund residential development project at the coastal town’s Extension 32, Kramersdorf area, The municipality’s spokesperson Linda Mupupa indicated that this agreement marks a major milestone in the provision of much-needed serviced land for housing. She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to urban expansion and sustainable development.
Mupupa added that in 2028, Swakopmund Council resolved to reserve three residential extensions in Kramersdorf, namely Extension 32, 33, and 36, with the intent to develop them for this purpose. “However, due to shifting priorities at the time, the implementation of this initiative was temporarily put on hold. Recognising the urgent need for housing, council revisited this decision. On January 27, 2022, [it] resolved to proceed with the development of Extension 32, the smallest of the three planned townships,” Mupupa stated.
Extension 32, Kramersdorf comprises 70 single residential erven, eight general residential erven, one institutional erf, and two public open spaces. Mupupa said the development will include infrastructures such as water, sewerage, semi-purified water, storm water drainage, and electrical installations. Provisions have also been made for telecommunication services, and the road network will be upgraded with bitumen surfacing, raised interlocked intersections, and paved sidewalks.
“In a strategic partnership to realise this goal, council approached Erongo RED to co-fund the development. While discussions between the two parties progressed, council advanced in the design and documentation for both the municipal and electrical infrastructure to ensure readiness.”
In the agreement, Erongo RED will contribute N$14 million towards the electrical infrastructure, while council will invest N$50 million into the development of the municipal infrastructure. “This partnership reflects a shared vision to accelerate the delivery of serviced land and foster inclusive urban growth in Swakopmund.”
