Xoagub steps down as NSC vice chair

Patrick Xoagub, the vice chairperson of the Namibia Sports Commission, has broken his silence following allegations that he remained in his position even after his term had effectively ended when he resigned as a principal last year.

It was only last week that Xoagub formally submitted his resignation as a board member of the NSC.

Xoagub joined the NSC board through the Namibia Schools Sports Union in 2023 as an ordinary member, before being elevated to vice chairperson in December last year. However, after stepping down in February as a school principal, he was expected to also give up his role at the commission, in line with Section 7(2) of the NSC Act of 2003.

In a letter sent to him in April by the ministry of sport, Xoagub was officially recalled from his position as a com- missioner following his resignation from the teaching profession.

As the situation stands, questions have been raised about whether Xoagub remained in the vice chairperson role for more than a year without proper legal standing, during which time he attended meetings that came with about N$4,000 per sitting, along with a monthly allowance of around N$3,800.

Over the past weekend, during the NSSU Annual General meeting held in Swakopmund, several attendees openly questioned why Xoagub was still serving on the NSC board despite no longer being a teacher.

When approached for comment, Xoagub told Confidente that he believed he could remain in the position because the law did not clearly require him to step down before the end of his term, which was due to expire in July this year.

“The NSC Act is not clear on whether I had to resign or not, and I was not aware of any requirement to do so. I still had two months left to serve. At the AGM in Swakopmund, the NSSU did raise the matter and discussed recalling me,” said Xoagub.
